After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1967 Alex
Gourlay spent the first twenty years of his career as a production
designer with BBC Television working on a complete range of
programmes both on location and in studio from light entertainment,
music and arts and documentaries to comedy and drama.
From 1989 he was Senior Television Designer at BBC Scotland
then becoming Head of Design in 1993, managing a department
of some 100 staff in scenic design, graphics, costume, make-up
and scenic services.
Since leaving the BBC in April 1995 he has helped set up
two companies, Propworks Ltd., and Soundstage (Scotland) Ltd.,-the
first as a provider of props., scenery and visual effects
equipment for the film, television and advertising industries
as well as consultancy on all aspects of production design
and the latter providing a large, sound-proofed, drive-in
studio hosting such T.V. and film procuctions as Rab C. Nesbit,
The Crow Road, and Acid House
Now lives in Port Appin, Argyll and in the Corbieres,S.France
working as a free-lance artist and designer.
